Welcome From The Chair

Welcome to the web site for the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nebraska’s flagship campus here in Lincoln.  We are a BIG Ten University on a steep growth trajectory!   The Department has strengths at the disciplinary interfaces in Chemical Biology and Materials Chemistry.  The former area builds around a long-standing tradition of research excellence in Organic Chemistry and Bioanalytical Chemistry and the latter benefits from an exceptional cadre of computational chemists.  Indeed, our newest hire, Joseph S. Francisco, former President of the ACS, and NAS Member serves as both Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Cordes Chair of Chemistry.  The Francisco hire nucleates the Nebraska Cluster for Computational Chemistry (NC3).

There is also a storied tradition in Mass Spectrometry here, dating back to NU’s designation as one of the 6 original NSF Regional Instrumentation Facilities and the founding of JASMS (Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry) in the Department, and reflected in the collaborative group of MS practitioners in the Nebraska Center for Mass Spectrometry (NCMS) today.  All of the facilities and scientists in the Department are located in Hamilton Hall, a 9 story, 220,000 square foot structure in the heart of City Campus, just across from Memorial Stadium.  I hope that you enjoy your visit to this web site, and that you take the opportunity to visit us in person if you are in the neighborhood.
