Catherine Eichhorn, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL), has received the American Chemical Society's E. Ann Nalley Midwest Region Award for Volunteer Service in recognition of her contributions to chemistry outreach, mentoring, and service to the scientific community.

The award honors volunteer service that advances the chemistry community and supports others. Eichhorn’s work reflects that spirit through her commitment to creating opportunities for students, early career scientists, and others to engage with chemistry.

Since joining UNL in 2019, Eichhorn has led and participated in outreach activities reaching hundreds of Nebraska students, including hands-on chemistry activities for elementary and high school students and professional development for teachers. She also has mentored 24 high school and undergraduate students, helping them develop research skills and pursue opportunities in science.

Her service extends throughout the regional chemistry community. Since 2021, Eichhorn has helped organize the Chicago Area NMR Discussion Group, an annual Midwest meeting that brings together about 100 scientists for scientific exchange and networking. She initiated student poster and travel awards through the group, providing financial support and recognition for early career scientists.

"Catherine’s dedication to promoting and supporting others closely reflects the spirit of E. Ann Nalley and her legacy of volunteerism, outreach and helping others advance in chemistry,” Martha Morton, director of research instrumentation at UNL, said.

This recognition celebrates not only Eichhorn’s contributions to chemistry, but her ongoing commitment to creating opportunities for others to learn, connect and succeed.

The department is part of the College of Arts and Sciences.
