Description: Summer/Short-Term Research Publication Grants provide support to scholars to prepare research manuscripts for publication and to independent researchers to prepare research for publication. Activities undertaken during the grant period can include drafting, editing, or modifying manuscripts; replicating research components; responding to issues raised through critical review; and other initiatives to increase the likelihood of publication.


American Cancer Society
Research Scholar Grants

Award: $165,000 Direct Costs per year for 4 years

Description: The Research Scholar Grant (RSG) supports investigator-initiated projects across the cancer research continuum.


American Chemical Society PRF
Doctoral New Investigator (DNI)

Award: $110,000 over 2 years
Deadline: March
Eligibility: Faculty in first 3 years
Description: The DNI Grant Program is designed as a source of funds for young investigators who are developing their own independent research projects. The new investigator must demonstrate that the project is an original research direction and is independent of their graduate or post-graduate studies.

New Directions Grant (ND)

Award: $100,000 over 2 years
Deadline: March
Eligibility: Tenure-track faculty
Description: The New Directions (ND) grants program provides funds to scientists and engineers with limited—or even no—preliminary results for a research project they wish to pursue, and who intend to use the PRF-driven preliminary results to seek continuation funding from other agencies.


American Diabetes Association Core Research Program
Innovative Basic Science (IBS) Award 

Award: up to 3 years of support at $115,000 per year
Deadline: November
Eligibility: Faculty, U.S. Citizens or those authorized to work in the U.S.
Description: These awards support basic research with novel and innovative hypotheses in any area relevant to the etiology or pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications that holds significant promise for advancing the prevention, cure or treatment of diabetes. Applications proposing high-risk projects with the potential for high-impact results are encouraged, as are studies that may not be sufficiently developed for traditional funding sources.

Junior Faculty Development (JDF) 

Award: $138,000/year, plus optional student loan repayment ($10K/year)
Deadline: April
Eligibility: Faculty, U.S. Citizens or those authorized to work in the U.S.
Description: These awards support early investigators as they establish independence as diabetes researchers.


American Heart Association
Collaborative Science Award

Award: $250,000 per year for 3 years
Deadline: Letter of Intent Due in November
Eligibility: At least one Co-PI must work in cardiovascular or stroke-related research and at least one Co-PI must work in a divergent/disparate discipline. U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residence. See website for further eligibility criteria.
Description: To foster innovative collaborative approaches to research projects that propose novel pairings of investigators from at least two broadly disparate disciplines. The proposal must focus on the collaborative relationship, such that the scientific objectives could not be achieved without the efforts of at least two co-principal investigators and their respective disciplines.


Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation
Beckman Young Investigators Program

Award: Typically $600,000 over 4 years
Deadline: Letter of Intent due in September
Eligibility: Faculty members within the first 3 years of a tenure-track position with less than $250,000 in direct annualized external funding. U.S. citizens or permanent residents
Description: The BYI program funds promising young scientists early in their careers who have not yet received a major award from another organization.


Blavatnik Family Foundation
Blavatnik National Award for Young Scientists

Award: $20,000

Eligibility: Assistant Professor in Life Sciences, Phyiscal Sciences & Engineering, or Chemistry. Must be nominated by institution
Description: The purpose of the Dissertation Fellowship is to offset a scholar’s living expenses while she completes her dissertation.


Brain and Behavior Research Foundation
NARSAD Distinguished Investigator Grant

Award: up to $100,000 for 1 year
Deadline: July
Eligibility: Intended for established scientists (Full Professors) who maintain peer reviewed competitively funded scientific programs
Description: All research must be relevant to our understanding, treatment and prevention of serious psychiatric disorders such as: schizophrenia, bipolar, mood and anxiety disorders, or early onset brain and behavior disorders.

NARSAD Independent Investigator Grant

Award: up to $100,000 for 2 years
Deadline: December
Eligibility: Intended for scientists at the associate professor level (or equivalent) with national competitive supports as a Principal Investigator (P.I.)
Description: All research must be relevant to our understanding, treatment and prevention of serious psychiatric disorders such as: schizophrenia, bipolar, mood and anxiety disorders, or early onset brain and behavior disorders.

NARSAD Young Investigator Grant

Award: Up to $35,000 for 2 years
Deadline: March
Eligibility: Doctoral-level degree and be employed in research training, or be in a faculty research position, Citizenship unrestricted

The Elsa U. Pardee Foundation
Elsa U. Pardee Foundation funds

Award: By design, there are no limits set on the grant amount that can be requested. The Foundation particularly encourages grant applications for a one-year period which will allow establishment of capabilities of new cancer researchers, or new cancer approaches by established cancer researchers.

Description: The Johnson & Johnson Scholars Award Program aims to fuel the development of female STEM2D leaders and feed the STEM2D talent pipeline by awarding and sponsoring women at critical points in their research careers.

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
The NRC Research Associateship Program –Senior Associate Award

Award: 8-14 summer weeks (renewable) of $45-$80k (pro-rated) stipend, plus health insurance, relocation benefits, and allowance for travel.
Deadline: Four yearly deadlines
Eligibility: Applicants must have held the doctorate for more than five years at the time of application
Description: This program is to support a senior faculty member to conduct independent research in a federal laboratory or affiliated institution.

Jefferson Science Fellowship Program

Award: $50,000 stipend for living expenses and $10,000 travel budget while in performing JSF duties.
Deadline: Usually in August
Eligibility: U.S. Citizens, tenured status
Description: After successfully obtaining a security clearance, selected Jefferson Science Fellows spend one year on assignment at the U.S. Department of State or USAID as science advisors on foreign policy/international development issues. Assignments are tailored to the needs of the hosting office, while taking into account the Fellows’ interests and areas of expertise. Following the fellowship year, Fellows will return to their academic career but will remain available to the U.S. government as an experienced consultant for short-term projects.

Description: CSA proposals contain a research plan, an educational plan and a clear statement on how the CSA will help applicants become truly outstanding teacher-scholars and future academic leaders. The project plans must be for a period of three years. The ability of applicants to mount a strong and innovative research program and achieve excellence in education and their potential leadership skills are key criteria in the selection of the awards.


The Searle Funds
The Searle Scholars Program

Award: $100,000 per year for three years
Deadline: February
Eligibility: Applicants are expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences. U.S. citizen or permanent residents.
Description: The Searle Scholars Program supports research of outstanding individuals who have recently begun their appointment at the assistant professor level, and whose appointment is their first tenure-track position. Must be nominated by your institution.


Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
Research grants

Award: $450,000 over 3 years

Eligibility: Faculty less than 6 years on the tenure track.
Description: Focus area varies by year. For example: FY18 priorities include to support studies on new treatments for ER+ breast cancer and TNBC that have developed resistance to standard therapy, which will lead to a reduction in breast cancer deaths by 2026 and to support translational research into the understanding, detection, and treatment of metastatic (Stage IV) breast cancer which will lead to a reduction in breast cancer deaths by 2026.
