Undergraduate Program Earning a Chemistry Minor
1. Why is there a Plan A and Plan B minor?
If you have only one minor, you must meet the Plan A minor requirements. If you have more than one minor, you may choose the Plan B requirements. The requirements for both are to take one year of freshman chemistry and one year of organic chemistry. For the Plan A minor, you must also take one advanced chemistry course.
2. What are the requirements for a Plan A minor in Chemistry?
The Plan A requirements are: “Freshman Sequence” plus “12 additional hours” of chemistry excluding Chem 131, 195, 396, and 399. The meaning of “Freshman Sequence” is either Chem 109 + 110 + 221 for 12 credits, or 113 + 114 + 116 for 9 credits. The meaning of “12 additional hours” differs somewhat but here is the most common choice. The 25x Organic Sequence (Chem 251 + 253 + 252 + 254) for 8 credits and then 4 credits of Chem 431 Biochemistry I. In other words, if you are a Biochemistry or Biological Sciences major, you probably qualify for a Plan A Chemistry minor.
3. What are the requirements for a Plan B minor in Chemistry?
The Plan B requirements are: “Freshman Sequence” plus “8 additional hours” of chemistry excluding Chem 131, 195, 396, and 399. Many students who already have one minor, qualify for this minor.
