Department of Chemistry

Celebrating Our 125th Anniversary

Community Demos

In an effort to bring the amazing world of chemistry to Nebraska's communities the University of Nebraska's Chemistry Department is offering on-site chemistry demonstrations complete with sound and light special effects. These demonstrations can be scheduled by sending an email to Dr. Jason Kautz at chemdemo@unl.edu.

Demonstrations will include but not limited to:

  • Hydrogen combustion
  • Using red cabbage as an acid/base indicator
  • Oxidation of a gummi bear
  • Synthesis of nylon
  • Catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
  • Thermite reaction
  • Oxidation of magnesium with CO2
  • 2008 Big Red Road Show
  • Examples

What is the most important concept in the human understanding of science? The answers of course are numerous, but Dr. Kautz, General Chemistry Coordinator at the UNL Chemistry Department believes the following concept is the most important:

  • Unique properties of matter are a consequence of the arrangement of atoms and molecules. If the arrangements are different, the properties are different.

Modern understanding of molecules gives us unprecedented control over matter. In many instances, simply changing the way atoms are arranged in matter has surprising results. By making detailed observations, we are able to better understand matter - that is what science is about.
