UNL Chemistry Day

Saturday, October 6, 2007

9:00-9:40 am   Registration, Tours of Hamilton Hall
    Building Tours begin every 5 minutes. You will visit the Resource Center, Undergraduate Instrumentation Center, and Undergraduate Lounge. You can also spend some time in the lobby visiting the exhibits.
9:40-10:45 am   Tours of Research Labs
    You can choose three professor's labs that you want to visit. Each visit will last 15 minutes during which the professor will tell about the research taking place in the lab.  There will be 5 minutes to walk from one lab to the next.
11:00 am   UNL Chemistry Major Program Overview
    Experimental Demonstration, careers and your chemistry degree(s), BS & BA Chemistry Program Requirements, Independent Research for BS majors, Scholarship Program
12:00 pm   Students: Lunch & T-Shirt Chromatography
    The noon hour will be separated into two sections.  One part will be a free lunch catered by Valentino's Pizza served in the Chemistry Resource Center and then a hands-on activity of T-Shirt Chromatography where you will receive a free T-shirt to decorate.
    Teachers: Teacher's Roundtable
    While eating lunch with other teachers, you'll learn lively and unique demonstrations that you can do at your high school. A handout will tell you how to do them. There will be a drawing for one class to receive a visit from Dr. Kautz.
1:00 pm   A Periodic Table of Elements in the Movies
   

In this presentation, Prof. Mark Griep will show clips from about 15 movies that feature the chemical elements.  The categories will include classical elements, hydrogen isotopes, deadly elements, radioactive elements, and science fiction elements.

2:00 pm   Scholarships, Prizes, & Answers
    Find out who won the Chemistry Department Scholarships and other prizes at this session. There will also be an opportunity to answer any remaining questions.
2:30 pm   Tours of UNL Campus (optional)
