GC-MS Instrumentation

HP 5890/5972 GC-MS

HP 5890/5972 GC-MS

The instrument consists of a 5890 Series II Gas Chromatograph, with a model 5972 mass-selective detector. A liquids autosampler is available for use. The mass spectrometer can be set up to operate in either EI or CI mode. A mass-spectra database (EI spectra only) is available with the data analysis software. This is currently the only hands-on GC-MS in the department, and serves the GC-MS needs of a variety of researchers throughout the University.

Thermo Scientific Focus GC/PolarisQ MS

This GC-MS is shared between the undergraduate and graduate research facilities. It has an autosampler that can hold up to 108 samples for automated acquisitions. The mass spectrometer is an ion trap, which allows MS/MS experiments to be performed on volatile components. The observable mass range is up to 1050, with unit mass resolution. It can be operated in either the EI or CI mode. An EI-only NIST library is available on the computer. This system is web enabled and can load the data to UNL's Blackboard site.
