Faculty Openings
Dear Friends and Visitors,
We are particularly interested in applicants with research interests in homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis broadly related to energy science (requisition #090497), organic chemistry broadly related to defining and/or modulating macromolecular interactions, assembly and function (assistant professor applicants only, requisition #090496), and mass spectrometry related to bioanalytical or biophysical chemistry (requisition #090504). Applicants should have a Ph.D. in chemistry or a related discipline, a demonstrated research record, the potential for establishing and/or maintaining a nationally prominent and competitively funded research program, and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. More information on each position can be found by clicking on the links above.
The UNL Chemistry Department is committed to excellence and in partnership with a supportive administration is building to enhance its stature within the scientific community and its national and international research rankings. A series of discussions and Faculty Retreats over the past 18 months led to formulating the following three initiative statements for the Department.
- Nanomaterials for Mesoscale Devices. An interdisciplinary initiative focusing on the theory, synthesis and application of nanomaterials toward the engineered multi-dimensional assembly of materials into controllable machines and sensors.
- Carbon Neutral Energy Science. An interdisciplinary initiative focusing on carbon neutral energy cycles using non-traditional materials, catalysts and biorenewable fuel sources for energy production and storage beyond ethanol.
- Macromolecular Assembly. An interdisciplinary initiative focusing on fundamental properties defining and modulating macromolecular interactions, assembly, and function.
The three initiative statements describe research focus areas addressing timely and important problems in which the Department has a presence and a competitive advantage. Each affords an opportunity to use additional resources to take a leadership role on campus to develop signature programs of national and international prominence. In addition to the three initiatives described above are strengths in the chemistry related to medical Imaging (Profs. DiMagno and Rajca), rapid bioanalysis (Profs. Hage, Powers, Lai, Li, Cheung, Parkhurst and Cerny) and the chemistry of drug design and synthesis (Profs. Powers, Dussault, Berkowitz, Du, Takacs, Hage, Griep and Cerny), chemistry related to new biomaterials (Prof. Redepenning) and self-assembly of functional materials in nanoscience (Profs. Zeng, Cheung, Lai and Eckhardt) and molecular nanoscience (Profs. Choe, Takacs and Zeng). Departmental strengths in these areas contribute to broader initiatives across campus, within the NU system and to the growth of the new NU Innovation Campus.
The research initiatives and areas of strength outlined above form the core of the Department’s Strategic Plan for Excellence in Chemistry: Maintaining strength in basic research while encouraging and enabling contributions to interdisciplinary fields and to important applied problems. The Department seeks to build upon these research strengths and has been approved to add three faculty this coming academic year. Two of the searches are at the associate or assistant rank; the third target a new assistant professor.
Applicants must complete the online Faculty/Administrative form for the appropriate position (http://employment.unl.edu) and upload: a cover letter; detailed curriculum vitae; description of proposed research; summary of past, current and pending research support (if applicable); brief teaching statement; and names of three references. Applicants for assistant professor must also arrange for three confidential letters of reference to be sent by email to or to Search Committee, Department of Chemistry, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE 68588-0304. Review of applications will begin November 9, 2009, and continue until the positions are filled. The University of Nebraska has an active NSF ADVANCE gender equity program, and is committed to a pluralistic campus community through affirmative action, equal opportunity, work-life balance, and dual careers.
